State authorization and licensure disclosures for Southeastern's nursing programs
Southeastern Louisiana University belongs to NC-SARA, which lets it teach online and supervise field experiences for residents of other states. Its professional licensure disclosure page, though, names only one graduate nursing program, the PMHNP certificate, with no state-by-state answer, and leaves the MSN tracks and the DNP off the list. Put that beside the Louisiana RN license and Louisiana clinical rules, and Southeastern's graduate nursing programs are clearly built for nurses licensed and training in Louisiana.

Southeastern and NC-SARA
NC-SARA membership lets a college offer distance education to students in other member states without winning separate approval in each one. Southeastern states on its Online Programs page and its Professional Licensure Disclosures page that membership allows it to deliver distance programs, both online coursework and supervised field experiences, to students who live outside Louisiana.
That answers whether Southeastern may teach you online from another state. It does not answer whether a program will qualify you for a professional license in that state, and Southeastern says so on the same page. Membership also gives distance students a route for complaints: the Online Programs page links the SARA student complaint process for concerns that go beyond the university.
For nurse practitioners, the license question is the one that matters. NPs are licensed state by state, and Louisiana has not enacted the APRN Compact, so an APRN license earned in Louisiana does not travel on its own.
What the licensure disclosure page says
Southeastern's Professional Licensure Disclosures page is short, and each line carries weight for a future nurse practitioner. In our own words, it makes five points.
- Several Southeastern programs lead to professional licensure within Louisiana.
- NC-SARA membership grants no licensing reciprocity and no exemption from any state's professional requirements, so meeting Louisiana's standards may not be enough somewhere else.

Where the nursing programs appear
Only two nursing programs appear on the disclosure list, and only one of them carries a state table. The rest of Southeastern's nursing programs are absent.

No table exists for any nurse practitioner or DNP program. Southeastern's Online Programs page lists the MSN, the DNP and the psychiatric NP certificate among its online offerings, so the programs you can take online and the programs with a published licensure answer are not the same list. For now, licensure outside Louisiana is a question for you and the other state's board of nursing.
What it means for where you live and train
Southeastern publishes no rule that graduate nursing students must live in Louisiana. What it does publish ties you to the state in other ways. The MSN and the PMHNP certificate keep clinical hours in Louisiana, Louisiana's board requires every preceptor to hold a Louisiana license, and most graduate entries ask for a Louisiana RN license. DNP students also travel to the Hammond campus for orientation and the project defense, and certificate students attend an onsite orientation.
So a nurse in Mississippi or Texas can study online, but trains with Louisiana preceptors at Louisiana sites and plans for campus trips. After graduation, licensure in another state is yours to confirm with that state's board, and Southeastern's MSN page notes that some certification exams call for clinical experience beyond the master's program. The Louisiana RN license requirement
In practice, the license requirement does more than NC-SARA to decide who can enroll. The MSN admission page and catalog call for a valid, unencumbered Louisiana RN license, the consortium handbook requires you to keep it unencumbered for the whole MSN, and the post-master's certificates want Louisiana RN licensure plus, for nurse practitioners, an APRN license.
The doctoral side is less uniform, since two of its entries accept U.S. licensure while the rest name Louisiana. The undergraduate RN to BSN, by contrast, accepts a license through the Louisiana board or the Nurse Licensure Compact, which Louisiana implemented in 2019. RN license requirements sets out each program's exact wording, and nothing on the graduate pages says whether a multistate license from another state satisfies them.
What to confirm before you apply
- Check your licenseMake sure you hold, or can obtain, an active Louisiana RN license before the admission deadline, and an APRN license too for a post-master's certificate.
- Ask about residenceIf you live outside Louisiana, ask the Graduate Nursing Office whether out-of-state applicants are admitted to your track; Southeastern does not say publicly.
- Check the state where you will practiceIf you plan to work elsewhere, ask that state's board of nursing about Southeastern's program before you start, as the disclosure page advises.
- Map your clinical geographyWork out where in Louisiana you can train for three clinical semesters, and how you will reach Hammond for any required visit.
- Plan ahead for a moveIf a move is possible, talk to the program before it happens, since it can affect enrollment, licensure and aid.
- DNP students: ask about residency locationAsk whether residency hours must be in Louisiana for your track, since no published page says.

Can I enroll in Southeastern's online MSN if I live outside Louisiana?
Southeastern publishes no residency rule for its online graduate programs, and NC-SARA membership lets it teach students in other states. The practical limits are a Louisiana RN license, clinical hours in Louisiana and any required campus visits. Whether out-of-state applicants are admitted to a given track is not stated publicly, so ask the Graduate Nursing Office before you apply.
Will a Southeastern NP program qualify me for a license in another state?
Southeastern has not said. Its disclosure page gives no state-by-state answer for the PMHNP certificate and leaves the MSN and DNP off the list. Each state board sets its own APRN requirements, so contact the board where you plan to practice before you start and ask whether it accepts Southeastern's program as it stands.
What is the SARA complaint process?
It is a route for distance students to take an unresolved complaint beyond the university, and Southeastern's Online Programs page links to it. Start inside first: the consortium handbook sets out a formal complaint procedure for MSN students that begins within five working days of the situation, and Southeastern has its own channels.
Why is the PMHNP certificate on the disclosure list but not the MSN?
Southeastern does not explain. The list names programs that customarily lead to licensure and notes that the university is still gathering information. The PMHNP certificate appears without a link, meaning no determination yet, and the MSN and DNP are absent. Treat the gap as an open question and confirm licensure plans with the relevant state board.
Does NC-SARA let me do clinicals in my home state?
Not for Southeastern's MSN or PMHNP certificate. Membership lets a university offer supervised field experiences across state lines in general, but each program sets its own rules, and these two keep clinical hours in Louisiana. Louisiana's board also requires every preceptor to hold a Louisiana license, which a clinician practicing only in another state lacks.
