Southeastern Preceptor is an independent placement service for Southeastern Louisiana University nursing students. Southeastern's graduate students choose their own preceptors, with course faculty collaborating; we do the finding, matching each preceptor to your exact course and to Louisiana's rules. Course faculty approve every preceptor and the graduate coordinator reviews each one, and our job is to see that everything they receive is complete.

Who we are
We are a placement desk for Southeastern nursing students, working across Louisiana. Our work begins where a Southeastern clinical course begins: a course number, a patient population, a semester and a student who needs a Louisiana preceptor for 200 or 275 hours. We look for preceptors and sites near you, test each one against the rules that decide whether your hours will count, and hand you a proposal ready for your course faculty.
The decisions stay where Southeastern puts them. Course faculty plan the experience with you and approve every preceptor, the graduate coordinator reviews, and the university signs the agreement with the facility. Everything before and around those decisions is ours to do, early and in full.

- Hours are planned on unpaid time, including at your own employer.
- What faculty need is gathered before you ask them: the CV, a license check, a practice summary and a draft schedule.

How thorough we are
Thoroughness is the service, so here is what it means in practice. Before a name reaches you, we have read the catalog description of your course and matched the practice's patients to it, confirmed the preceptor's Louisiana license through the Board of Nursing's public lookup and checked the certification against your population, asked how many graduate students the preceptor already has that term, and asked the facility whether it holds an agreement with Southeastern and who would sign a new one.
We also check what the site asks of students on its own, such as an extra background check or orientation, so compliance is settled before day one. When a candidate falls short on population, license or timing, you hear it from your placement advisor first, with a stronger option alongside it.
With you through the semester
Approval marks the middle of our work, not the end. Your placement advisor remains reachable through the course: if a preceptor's schedule shifts, a site pauses students or someone steps away, the replacement search starts at once, and the new candidate arrives with the same checks, ready for faculty review.
We also plan ahead. While you are in one clinical course, the search for the next is already under way, so Family Health II or Psychiatric/Mental Health III is planned well before it opens. That matters most in your last clinical semester, when a late start leaves the least room to recover.
How we write and check this site
Our guides come from Southeastern's own documents and Louisiana's official sources: the 2026-27 catalog, Southeastern's program pages, the consortium student handbook in its October 2025 revision and the 2021 copy Southeastern still links, the consortium faculty handbook, the Louisiana Administrative Code and each health system's own student page. Every guide carries the date it was checked.
Where Southeastern's documents disagree, we show the disagreement rather than quietly picking a side: 750 clinical hours in the catalog against 600 on the majors pages for the NP tracks, for example, or Canvas today against Moodle in the handbooks. Where something is not public, such as the semester deadline for naming a preceptor, we say so and name who holds it. Clinical hours shows the approach at work.
Who we work with
Southeastern graduate students in every track with precepted hours: the MSN FNP and PMHNP, the FNP and PMHNP certificates, both DNP routes, and MSN Nursing Education. DNP students also come to us for residency sites and mentors that suit a project. Who will I work with at Southeastern Preceptor?
A placement advisor at our placement desk handles your request from the first reply through the end of the semester, including any replacement search. The form, the chat and the message buttons on every page all reach the desk, and your advisor keeps your course, dates and location on record so you never have to start over.
What if I've already found someone willing to precept me?
Bring them to us. Tell us who it is and which course, and we check the fit against the course's population, Louisiana's license and certification rules and the facility's agreement status, then help you assemble what course faculty need. If the fit looks thin, we search for a backup at the same time, so a declined candidate still leaves you with an option.
Do you help students who live far from Hammond?
Yes. The search starts from your home parish wherever it is in Louisiana, from Lake Charles to Alexandria or Monroe, because every MSN clinical hour has to be completed in the state. Distance from Hammond matters little for clinicals; DNP students still travel to campus for orientation and the project defense.
How do you keep your guides accurate?
We check each guide against Southeastern's current catalog, program pages and consortium handbooks and Louisiana's rules, date it, and revise it when a source changes. Your course faculty, the graduate coordinator and your advisor hold the final say on any rule, so check anything that affects your plan with them first.
