Baton Rouge and the Capital Area for Southeastern NP students

Seven parishes around the capital
The Louisiana Department of Health's Region 2, the Baton Rouge Area, pairs East Baton Rouge (456,180 people) with Ascension (135,105), Iberville (29,579), West Baton Rouge (28,756), Pointe Coupee (19,520), East Feliciana (18,911) and West Feliciana (15,134). Together they reached 703,185 in July 2025, up 1.0% from the 2020 base, one of only three regions to grow while the state declined.
All seven parishes count as metropolitan and sit in the Baton Rouge metro area, which also takes in Livingston and St. Helena from the Northshore. Towns stretch from Zachary and Central to Gonzales, Plaquemine, New Roads and St. Francisville, and Baton Rouge itself is roughly 44 miles from the Hammond campus.
Southeastern's Baton Rouge Center on Essen Lane hosts the final three semesters of BSN classes and skills lab, and the consortium handbook lists it as a graduate office. In a 2016 board of nursing record on undergraduate clinicals, Southeastern described its clinical footprint as half Northshore, half Baton Rouge.
Hospitals, and which publish a student route
Only one Capital Area hospital system posts a process for outside graduate nursing students. For the rest, the route depends on a preceptor you find and a contract the university confirms.
- Ochsner Medical Center - Baton Rouge: Ochsner's clinical education page applies, with school-only requests in InPlace by posted term dates and no student contact with providers. The Greater New Orleans guide lists the dates.
- FMOL Health | Our Lady of the Lake: the Regional Medical Center, the Children's Hospital and Our Lady of the Lake St. Elizabeth in Gonzales. FMOL's education pages cover graduate medical education, pharmacy, psychology and clinical pastoral education, with no nursing or NP student page.
- Baton Rouge General, Bluebonnet and Mid City: its medical education pages cover medical students, residencies and its own hospital School of Nursing.
- Woman's Hospital: the region's women's and infants' hospital, with no student placement page.
- Lane Regional Medical Center, Zachary: its only student items are a summer nurse tech internship and AHEC visits for high school students.
Southeastern's February 2026 news on Epic record training with Our Lady of the Lake concerns BSN labs, not NP clinicals. For psychiatric care, CMS's July 2026 file lists the state's Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson, plus Seaside Health System and several Baton Rouge behavioral hospitals, none with a published student process.
Community health centers from the city to the Felicianas
HRSA lists 83 active health center sites in the region, and they reach the rural parishes the hospitals do not. School-based sites mostly follow the school year, which suits a fall or spring course better than summer.

A city without a primary care designation, parishes with several
East Baton Rouge joins St. Tammany, West Baton Rouge and St. Charles as the only Louisiana parishes lacking any area or population primary care designation; just its four FQHC facilities carry one. West Baton Rouge has neither kind; it is one of only two parishes statewide with no mental health designation. The rural parishes tell a different story.

Does Our Lady of the Lake accept NP students from Southeastern?
FMOL Health's website posts no page for nursing or NP students; its education pages cover medical residents, pharmacy, psychology and pastoral training. Bring any Our Lady of the Lake preceptor to your course faculty for approval, and confirm whether the university already holds a contract with the hospital.
Is Our Lady of the Lake St. Elizabeth the old Our Lady of the Lake Ascension?
Yes. The Gonzales hospital returned to its original name, Our Lady of the Lake St. Elizabeth, a change local coverage dates to March 2025, and in November 2025 FMOL Health became the single brand for the system. Search contract and preceptor records under both names so an older entry is not missed.
How early should I plan for Ochsner Medical Center - Baton Rouge?
On Ochsner's clinical education page, a school representative must enter the InPlace request by June 15 for a fall rotation, by November 15 for spring or by March 15 for summer, and setting up a new affiliation agreement needs four months or more. Raise the site with your course faculty well before those dates.
Can I get women's health hours at Woman's Hospital?
Woman's is the region's women's and infants' hospital, but its website posts no student placement page, so there is no public route for NP students. OB-GYN practices, family practices that see pregnant patients and community health centers are the practical alternatives for the child-bearing women portion of NURS 6820.
