NURS 6830 Advanced Practice Nursing: Family Health II is the middle course of Southeastern Louisiana University's FNP sequence: five credits, three didactic hours and 275 practicum hours with adults, open once you have passed NURS 6820. In most plans it shares its semester with other heavy coursework, so the adult preceptor is best settled before the term begins.

NURS 6830 in the catalog

Southeastern's 2026-27 catalog gives NURS 6830 five credits, split into three didactic hours and a 275-hour practicum each semester, with a laboratory fee attached. The description states the clinical focus plainly: "Clinical experiences will focus on the care of individuals and families in the adult populations." The only prerequisite it lists is NURS 6820, and NURS 6830 is in turn the prerequisite for NURS 6840.

Those 275 hours are the first of two equal blocks. Add them to the 200 from Family Health I and, by our count, 475 of your 750 FNP hours are behind you when the course ends. FNP 750 hours sets all three courses side by side.

The semester it shares

Family Health II rarely runs alone. Southeastern's catalog plans pair it with other demanding work:

MSN FNP, semester 4: with NURS 6810 Business, Leadership, and Health Policy for Nurse Practitioners and either NURS 6950 Focused Scholarly Project or NURS 6990 Thesis.
BSN to DNP, FNP concentration, semester 5 in the fall: with NURS 8040 Clinical Scholarship and Analytic Methods for Evidence Based Practice and NURS 8310 Epidemiology and Preventative Care for Populations.

In the doctoral fall term that adds up to 12 credits, five of them in Family Health II, alongside 275 hours at your site. When the week is that full, a preceptor who can offer steady, predictable clinic days is worth more than one who is a shorter drive but can only host you now and then.

How it builds on NURS 6820

Family Health II opens only after Family Health I, and passing matters more than the prerequisite line suggests. Southeastern requires at least a B in every graduate nursing course to progress, and the consortium handbook makes an unsatisfactory final evaluation from a preceptor or faculty member an F in a clinical course. A grade below B brings probation and a repeat within two regular semesters; a D or F leads to dismissal.

The new population changes the search as well. The pediatric and women's health settings that served NURS 6820 may not carry the adult caseload this course needs, so plan on a fresh search unless your Family Health I site also sees many adults. A new preceptor means a new letter of agreement and a current CV on file, and a new facility means checking its contract status. Even with the same preceptor, you plan the semester again with the Family Health II faculty member.

Preceptors who fit adult populations

The pool is wider than for Family Health I. Family practices, internal medicine and adult primary care offices, and community health centers all see adults, and HRSA lists 550 active health center sites across Louisiana. The fit still has to satisfy Southeastern and Louisiana.

What a Family Health II preceptor needs

An active, unencumbered Louisiana RN or APRN license, which Louisiana requires of every preceptor.
For most of your hours, APRN certification in a population focus that matches the course; Louisiana allows a mix of clinicians, physicians included, for the remainder.
The consortium's qualifications: a master's or doctorate in a relevant field, current licensure, APRN certification in the right area, a practice suited to your learning and at least a year of clinical experience.
Room for you: Louisiana caps each preceptor at two graduate APRN students during any given clinical experience.
A facility that holds, or is willing to sign, a contract or letter of agreement with the university.

One small conflict: the consortium's student handbook requires that year of preceptor experience, while its faculty handbook calls it preferred. Plan on the stricter version. Preceptor requirements has the detail.

275 hours without counting paid time

At 275 hours the calendar gets tight for a working nurse. By our count that is about 34 eight-hour days, or about 28 ten-hour days, inside one semester, and none of it can come from time your employer pays you for. The consortium lets you choose a preceptor where you work, but the clinical hours must stay separate from your job duties and unpaid.

If Family Health II is your doctoral fall term, Southeastern's fall 2026 calendar ran from August 19 to a last class day of December 4, with fall break and the Thanksgiving closure inside it. That is roughly 18 clinical hours a week if you start on the first day, and more for every week the paperwork runs late. Can I keep my NURS 6820 preceptor for NURS 6830?

Only if the practice gives you enough experience with adults, and only with approval from the Family Health II faculty member, since preceptor plans are made course by course each semester. A family practice with a broad patient mix is the likeliest case. Expect to submit a letter of agreement for the new course even with the same preceptor.

Does urgent care count for NURS 6830?

Southeastern's catalog defines Family Health II by population, adults, not by setting, and nothing we found names or excludes urgent care. Your course faculty decide whether a site's patient mix and your role there meet the course objectives, so raise the site with them before you commit your semester to it.

Is NURS 6830 offered every semester?

The catalog description lists no offered terms. Its place in each plan tells you when you will take it: semester 4 of the MSN FNP, the fall of semester 5 in the BSN to DNP FNP, and the second semester of the FNP certificate. Your program plan and advisor confirm the actual term.

Do I need a new contract if I change sites for NURS 6830?

Only if the new facility lacks a current one. The university holds contracts or letters of agreement with facilities, and you check a site's status in the clinical tracking system.
