750 FNP clinical hours at Southeastern, course by course
Southeastern Louisiana University's Family Nurse Practitioner track asks for 750 precepted hours in three back-to-back courses: 200 in NURS 6820, then 275 in NURS 6830 and 275 in NURS 6840. By our count that is roughly 13 to 20 hours a week in a fall or spring semester and far more in summer, and each course needs a preceptor who fits its population.

The three Family Health courses
Every FNP route at Southeastern, whether the MSN, the post-master's certificate or the BSN to DNP, passes through the same three Family Health courses. Each is five credits, pairs three didactic hours with a block of practicum hours per semester, and opens only after the one before it.

The catalog prints 750 clinical hours for the MSN, which runs 42 credits or 45 with a thesis, and 750 documented practicum hours for the FNP certificate. Each course has its own guide: Family Health I, Family Health II and Family Health III.
Where the courses fall in your plan
The three courses always run in consecutive semesters, but what surrounds them depends on your route.

Because NURS 6810 lists NURS 6820 as its prerequisite for FNP students, a late Family Health I delays the business and policy course as well. One lost semester moves every course after it, and the catalog asks students who skip graduate nursing courses for two consecutive regular semesters to reapply.
What 200 or 275 hours a semester means each week
Southeastern states the hours per semester and leaves the weekly schedule to you, your preceptor and your course faculty. To make the load concrete, we divided the hours by the class weeks in Southeastern's academic calendar. These are our estimates, not Southeastern figures, and they assume logging starts in week one. Summer 2027 dates were not posted when we checked, so the summer row uses 2026.

Counted in days, 200 hours is 25 eight-hour clinic days and 275 hours is about 34, or 20 and about 28 at ten hours a day. No hour can be logged until the contract, preceptor CV, letter of agreement and health records are on file, so each week lost to a late approval raises the weekly figure for the rest of the term. That is the practical case for settling the preceptor a full semester ahead.
750 or 600: the number to plan around
Southeastern's majors page for the FNP concentration lists 600 total clinical hours. The 2026-27 catalog lists 750, the certificate entry asks for 750 documented hours, and the three course descriptions add to exactly 750. No combination of the current course hours comes to 600 by our arithmetic, so we plan every FNP placement around 750 and treat 600 as a question for the graduate coordinator rather than a target.
If your program plan or a faculty member gives you a different figure in writing, that guidance governs your semester. Short of that, line up each preceptor for the full course hours. A preceptor who agreed to 200 hours for a 275-hour course leaves you looking for the remaining 75 in the middle of the term.
A different kind of preceptor for each course
The preceptor changes with the population. Family Health I needs children and child-bearing women, the hardest of the three to match in Louisiana: every children's hospital in the state lies outside the Northshore, and an archived copy of North Oaks' student page in Hammond says it offers no pediatric rotations at this time. Family Health II and III turn to adults and then older adults, where the pool widens to family and adult primary care practices and Louisiana's community health centers, which HRSA lists at 550 active sites statewide.
Whatever the course, Louisiana expects most NP clinical hours to be precepted by a population-matched APRN, lets other clinicians teach the remainder, and requires an active Louisiana license from every preceptor. Southeastern's graduate page names physicians as well as advanced practice nurses among its preceptors, and the consortium ties a variety of clinical experiences to success on the certification exam. Planning one semester at a time leaves every search short on lead time. Your placement advisor maps the three courses together: a pediatric and women's health preceptor for NURS 6820, adult primary care for NURS 6830 and a practice with many older adults for NURS 6840, each in your part of Louisiana and sized for its hours.

Questions Southeastern students ask
Can I use the same preceptor for all three FNP courses?
Southeastern publishes no rule against it, but each semester you plan the clinical experience with that course's faculty member, who approves the preceptor for that course's population. A family practice that sees children, pregnant patients, adults and older adults could suit more than one course, though the consortium says it values a variety of experiences before the certification exam. Raise it with faculty early.
How many days a week do FNP clinicals take if I work full time?
By our arithmetic, a 15-week fall semester needs a little under two eight-hour days a week for NURS 6820 and a bit over two for each 275-hour course; ten-hour days bring the 275-hour courses to about two. Hours worked while your employer pays you never count, so those days have to sit outside your paid shifts.
Do Southeastern FNP clinical hours have to be in Louisiana?
For the MSN, yes: Southeastern's MSN page puts all clinical hours in Louisiana, and Louisiana requires every preceptor to hold an active Louisiana RN or APRN license. The same Family Health courses serve the certificate and the BSN to DNP, where the catalog requires a Louisiana RN license. Louisiana-only clinicals explains the rule and its edges.
Does the FNP certificate require the same 750 hours?
Yes. The post-master's FNP certificate uses NURS 6820, NURS 6830 and NURS 6840 for 750 documented practicum hours over three semesters, with NURS 6810 in the last. Before you start, the graduate coordinator reviews your earlier advanced assessment, pharmacology and pathophysiology courses and may require any that fall short. Can I start logging NURS 6830 hours before NURS 6820 ends?
The catalog makes NURS 6820 a prerequisite for NURS 6830, and hours only begin once a course's file is complete: agency contract, preceptor CV, signed letter of agreement and health records. So plan Family Health II hours for the Family Health II semester. What you can do early is find the adult preceptor and raise the choice with faculty.
