Sims Library and Southeastern's student support offices, for nursing students studying online
Southeastern Louisiana University backs its nursing students with Sims Memorial Library's databases, interlibrary loan and round-the-clock chat, plus accessibility, counseling and career offices that serve graduate students as well as undergraduates. A few services are built around the Hammond campus, and the Writing Center's online reviews cover only English 101 and 102 papers. Sims Memorial Library: where the evidence work starts
Sims Memorial Library, which Southeastern also calls Linus Sims Memorial Library or simply Sims Library, is the research base for nursing students. Its nursing databases support the evidence work that runs through the graduate programs: NURS 6020 Generating Evidence for Nursing Practice, the NURS 6950 Focused Scholarly Project or NURS 6990 Thesis, and the DNP project that begins in NURS 8030 Project Planning.
When Sims does not own a book or article you need, Interlibrary Loan borrows it from another library. You register once in ILLiad, the library's interlibrary loan system, and place requests there. The consortium student handbook also names the Louisiana Academic Libraries Information Network Consortium (LALINC) as a borrowing route for consortium students.
Ask a Librarian offers chat around the clock, with text and phone options listed on the library's page. For a student who works a nursing shift and studies at night, the 24/7 chat is a practical way to get help with a search strategy, a database that will not cooperate, or a citation question without waiting for office hours.
Writing and tutoring: what reaches online students
The Southeastern Writing Center is in D Vickers, Room 2095, on the Hammond campus, staffed by graduate assistants and work-study students who meet writers one on one. It also runs online consultations by email, and its page states that only English 101 and 102 papers are reviewed that way.
For a graduate nursing student studying online, that means the remote option does not extend to a scholarly project, a thesis chapter or DNP writing. If you live within driving distance of Hammond, a face-to-face session is the route the center offers. Otherwise, build your writing support from course faculty feedback, the librarians for search and citation questions, and your DNP course faculty for project drafts.
The Tinsley Learning Center (TLC), in Tinsley Hall, Room 202, is Southeastern's tutoring hub. Its subjects lean toward undergraduate courses, which makes it most useful to BSN students and anyone finishing undergraduate prerequisites. Check its current subject list before counting on it for a graduate course.
Student Accessibility Services
Student Accessibility Services (SAS) manages accommodation requests through Accommodate, its online portal, and issues accommodation letters each semester. The office itself is in East Stadium, Room 126, but the portal means an online student can request accommodations from wherever they study.
Clinical courses deserve an early conversation. An accommodation that works for a Canvas exam, such as extra testing time, can look very different in a clinic running on a preceptor's patient schedule. Request your letter at the start of every semester, then talk with course faculty about how it applies to the clinical part of the course before your first clinical day, so the preceptor and the site hear a settled plan rather than a question.
University Counseling Center
The University Counseling Center (UCC) serves students, faculty and staff. Alongside in-person counseling, it lists telehealth services and a 24/7 emergency on-call service, and its page posts a crisis line. Telehealth is the piece that matters most for graduate nursing students who live hours from Hammond.
A nurse practitioner program layered on a nursing job is a long stretch: three clinical courses of 200 to 275 hours each, plus didactic work and a scholarly project. Reaching out to the counseling center early in a hard semester is easier than trying to rebuild a clinical schedule after the semester has slipped. If a personal crisis collides with clinical hours, tell course faculty as well.
Office of Career Services and Handshake
The Office of Career Services supports undergraduate and graduate students across every major. Employers post openings in Handshake, the office's recruiting platform, and the office also offers Hiration for resume building. Graduating nurse practitioners can use both, from the first draft of an NP resume to searching Louisiana postings.
The consortium points to a more direct route as well. Its FAQ observes that most students do their clinical work locally with physicians and NPs, often in practices that later offer them positions. That makes each preceptor choice a career decision as well as a course requirement: a preceptor in the town where you want to practice, serving the population you want to serve, is worth planning for from the first clinical course.
